If you’ve ever run your fingers through a Ragdoll’s silky fur, you already know — it’s basically a cloud with ears. That gorgeous semi-long coat is one of the things we love most about this breed, and keeping it looking its best is easier than you might think!
How often should you brush?
Aim for two to three times a week. A slicker brush works great for the topcoat, while a wide-tooth stainless steel comb is your best friend for the belly and under the arms — areas where tangles love to sneak in. The good news? Ragdolls don’t have a dense undercoat like some other longhaired breeds, so heavy matting is less of a battle than you might expect. That said, don’t wait until you spot a mat — by then, it usually needs to be cut out rather than combed through. A little consistency goes a long way!
What about baths?
Ragdolls don’t need frequent baths — every six to eight weeks is plenty for most cats, and only when they look greasy, dirty, or are dealing with dandruff. Always use a cat-safe shampoo and rinse thoroughly, since leftover soap can irritate their skin. Pat dry with a towel first, and if your kitty tolerates it, a blow dryer on the lowest heat setting finishes the job beautifully.
Don’t forget the nails!
Trimming nails every two to three weeks keeps your furniture (and your arms) happy. If it feels intimidating at first, just do a couple of nails at a time. Most Ragdolls are incredibly patient — it’s basically their superpower.
Grooming as bonding time
Here’s the secret bonus: grooming sessions are a wonderful way to bond with your Ragdoll. They’re social creatures who genuinely enjoy your attention, and a calm brushing routine quickly becomes something you both look forward to. It’s also the perfect time to quietly check for any skin changes, lumps, or little uninvited guests (like fleas) so you catch anything early.
