Let’s talk about the topic every cat owner thinks about but nobody loves to discuss — the litter box! Getting this right from the start makes your life so much easier and keeps your Ragdoll comfortable and confident in their home.
Size matters (more than you think)
Ragdolls are big cats — adults can weigh anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds and often don’t reach full size until they’re three or four years old! A standard litter box is simply too cramped for a full-grown Ragdoll to turn around and dig comfortably. Look for a jumbo or extra-large open box — roughly one and a half times your cat’s body length is the sweet spot. Cats who feel squeezed often start perching on the edge, which leads to misses. Not fun for anyone.
What litter works best?
Unscented, clumping clay litter is the gold standard. You might think a fresh-scented litter sounds appealing, but to your cat’s super-sensitive nose, artificial fragrances can be a real deterrent. Keep it simple and unscented — your Ragdoll will thank you.
Cleaning schedule
Scoop daily — twice daily if you can swing it. Do a full litter change and wash the box with mild soap and hot water once a week. A clean box is a used box!
How many boxes do you need?
The general rule is one box per cat, plus one extra. So if you have two Ragdolls, three boxes is the target. Place them in quiet, low-traffic spots around the house. Covered boxes might seem like a tidy solution, but many Ragdolls avoid them because trapped odors and dust are unpleasant. If you do use a cover, make sure there’s good airflow and clean even more frequently.
If something’s off…
If your Ragdoll is suddenly avoiding the box, straining, or making quick in-and-out visits, don’t just swap the litter and hope for the best — a vet visit is in order. Those can be signs of a urinary issue that needs attention sooner rather than later.
